Boise, ID – January 22, 2008

Boise, ID – Jan 22, 2008 – nextScan, the provider of the next generation in film and fiche scanning technology, today announced its support of the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP). The NDNP will create a national, digital resource of historically significant newspapers over the next 20 years from all the states and U.S. territories, published between 1836 and 1922. The resulting searchable database will be permanently maintained at the Library of Congress and be freely accessible to the public via the Internet.

By supplying film scanning hardware and a powerful and innovative new software called NextStar to state and local government agencies that plan to participate in the NDNP’s cooperative national effort, nextScan can help facilitate the digital conversion of historical microfilmed newspaper images in several formats, and deliver the superior image quality required by the NDNP specifications to enable accurate OCR of the digital files.

“nextScan is proud to be able to provide film scanning systems that can enable participants of the NDNP to conform to its technical specifications,” said Ernesto Pinal, Vice President Sales and Marketing with nextScan. “Many of the microfilmed newspaper images to be scanned go back to the mid-1800s. As one can imagine, these images will be very tough to convert to a digital format that can be searchable online. The images must be OCRed after they are scanned, and our unique Ribbon Scanning software, NextStar, includes powerful enhancement features that can provide the image quality needed to do this. This software, which meets all the strict image standards set forth by the Library of Congress, combined with the speed of nextScan scanners, can facilitate the fastest throughput for digitization of these newspapers with no need for rescans. We look forward to offering technology to participants of the NDNP for many years to come that will help create a repository of historically significant documents available to the world.”
